Indian Political Campaigns deploy AI deepfakes and voice clones in 2024 election
Political entities in India deployed AI-generated deepfakes and voice clones during the 2024 general election to influence voters. This involved creating synthetic audio and video of candidates and deceased politicians to disseminate disinformation and personalized outreach.
The challenge with fake audio alone is that often there is no reference; there is no original to find.

What happened
During the 2024 Indian general election, political parties and consultants used AI to create deepfakes of candidates and deceased politicians. Over 50 million personalized voice clone calls were made to voters to deliver tailored messages. These tools were used both for voter outreach and for spreading disinformation and fake endorsements.
What broke inside the model
- 01 · TriggerA user prompts the model in public view.
- 02 · Model stepThe model produces unsafe or off-brand output.
- 03 · Control gapNo filter holds the line before publish.
- 04 · FailureThe output goes public unchecked.
- 05 · ConsequenceA reputational or safety incident lands.
A contained signal crosses into output that goes public.
The failure was a lack of safety constraints and verification mechanisms in the deployment of generative AI for mass communication. By cloning voices and imagery, actors bypassed the trust normally associated with direct communication from political leaders.

- Prism
- OmniGuard
- AI Detection & Response (AIDR)
Realm watches the model's internal state for the signature of unsafe or off-brand generation and can block or reroute the output before it becomes public, in real time rather than after it has been screenshotted.
